Position Summary

The Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the specification, planning, installation, maintenance, reliability improvement, and repair of mechanical equipment across the Dumfries manufacturing site. This role is ideally suited to an experienced Mechanical Fitter, Mechanical Technician or Maintenance Engineer looking to progress into a broader engineering position with increased responsibility for projects, continuous improvement, and plant reliability.

Working closely with Operations, Maintenance and Engineering teams, the successful candidate will use their practical hands-on experience to improve equipment performance, support capital projects, and ensure full compliance with regulatory, statutory, and corporate HSE requirements.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Develops broad knowledge and skills in a specific practice area.
• Works on small projects or portions of larger projects
• Performs moderate design tasks.
• Prepares portions of project documents.
• Edits specifications.
• Performs research and investigations
• Assists in determining schedule and budget requirements.
• Evaluates, selects, and applies standard techniques, procedures, and criteria to perform a task or sequence of tasks for conventional projects with few complex features.
• Possesses effective oral and written communication skills.
• Assists with client, customer, or official contacts and communication pertaining to specific assignments or meetings.
• Collaboratively uses judgment to determine adaptations in methods for nonroutine aspects of assignments.

Keys to Success

Essential Experience

• Significant hands-on experience maintaining industrial plant and equipment.
• Proven fault-finding and repair experience on mechanical systems.
• Experience working on pumps, gearboxes, conveyors, bearings, and rotating equipment.
• Knowledge of pneumatic and hydraulic systems.
• Experience supporting shutdown and maintenance activities.
• Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical documentation.
• Strong problem-solving and root cause analysis skills.
• Experience working safely within manufacturing environments.
• Demonstrable commitment to health, safety, and environmental standards.

Desirable Experience

• Steam plant and utilities experience.
• CMMS experience (SAP preferred).
• Experience supporting engineering or capital projects.
• Contractor management experience.
• Budgetary awareness and supplier interaction.
• HNC/HND or degree in Mechanical Engineering.
• Working towards professional engineering qualifications.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• None
• Assigns tasks to and coordinates work with entry-level engineers, technicians, or administrative staff.
• Impacts quality of own work and the work of others on the team; works within guidelines and policies

Requirements and Preferred Skills

• At least 2-4 years experience in a Mechanical Engineering in a manufacturing, industrial environment
• Ideally a college or university degree in Mechanical Engineering
• Demonstration of effective supervision, knowledge of steam plant, pneumatic and hydraulic systems, mechanical systems and manufacturing equipment, including equipment design, maintenance and repair.
• Ability to demonstrate supplier negotiations and budgetory control experience and development and monitoring of specific goals and plans to prioritse, organise and accomplish work.
