Canavan Associates Ltd (CAL) is an established multidisciplinary consultancy specialising in town planning, environmental assessment, architecture and renewable energy development.

Based in Derry/Londonderry, we deliver renewable energy and infrastructure projects across Northern Ireland and Ireland.

Due to continued growth and an expanding portfolio of projects, we are seeking an EIA Consultant / Environmental Consultant to join our environmental team.

The Role

Working closely with our Environmental Manager, planning team and external technical specialists, you will support the coordination and delivery of Environmental Impact Assessments for renewable energy and infrastructure developments.

This role would suit an environmental professional with experience in technical report writing and environmental assessment who is ready to take greater responsibility for coordinating multidisciplinary project inputs.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare EIA screening requests, screening reports, scoping requests and scoping reports
• Draft and review Environmental Statement and Environmental Impact Assessment Report chapters
• Support the coordination and production of Environmental Statements, EIARs and associated planning documents
• Coordinate inputs from ecologists, ornithologists, hydrologists, landscape consultants, archaeologists and other technical specialists
• Review specialist reports to identify gaps, inconsistencies and outstanding information
• Maintain project schedules, environmental trackers, document registers and action lists
• Support the Environmental Manager in ensuring deliverables are accurate, consistent and completed on time
• Undertake environmental research, baseline reviews and planning policy assessments
• Liaise with clients, planning authorities, statutory consultees and other project stakeholders
• Attend and contribute to client, consultant and project meetings
• Assist with responses to requests for further environmental information
• Support the continuous improvement of CAL’s EIA processes, templates and quality standards

About You

Essential requirements

1. A degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Planning, Geography, Ecology or another relevant discipline
2. At least two years’ relevant experience in environmental consultancy, EIA, planning or infrastructure development
3. Experience preparing or contributing to Environmental Statements, EIARs or related environmental reports
4. Knowledge of the EIA and planning system in Northern Ireland and/or the Republic of Ireland
5. Strong technical writing, reviewing and analytical skills
6. Excellent organisational and project coordination abilities
7. Ability to manage competing priorities and contribute to several projects simultaneously
8. Strong attention to detail
9. Good communication skills and confidence working with clients and technical specialists
10. Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Experience in both Northern Ireland and Ireland would be particularly valuable. However, applications are also welcomed from candidates with strong experience in either jurisdiction.

Desirable Experience

• Renewable energy, electricity infrastructure or other major development projects
• EIA project coordination
• Environmental planning and consenting
• QGIS or ArcGIS
• Membership of, or progress towards membership of, ISEP, IES, RTPI, CIEEM or another relevant professional body
