The role of a board member

As a Board Member, you will contribute to setting the strategic direction of the organisation, providing constructive scrutiny and supporting effective governance. You will bring your skills and experience to help ensure the organisation continues to deliver impact, uphold people’s rights and drive improvement across the sector.

We value very highly the benefits of having different experience and points of view on our Boards and we are keen that people from all walks of life apply for public appointments. Scottish Ministers particularly welcome applications from women, disabled people, LGBTI+ people, people from ethnic minority communities and people aged under 50.

Remuneration: Members receive £214 per day. Travel and subsistence allowances are also payable, however, the appointments are not pensionable.

Time commitment: The time commitment is up to two days per month.

Appointment details: The appointment will be for up to 4 years at the end of which Scottish Ministers may consider reappointing you for a further term. A non-executive member’s total period of appointment will not exceed eight years.

Location: There are four formal Board Meetings per year usually held in the organisation’s headquarters in Dundee, however, meetings can occasionally be held elsewhere. Board meetings are held in public. In recent times, meetings have been held virtually. Although, going forward, the expectation is that the work will be a blend of virtual and physical meetings, a physical presence will be required to be able to carry out the full range of Board activities.

Interviews: Interviews will be held on 27th & 28th October 2026. The selection panel will be as flexible as is possible to ensure that no candidates are disadvantaged by the arrangements put in place.
