The Role

As an MQ Administrator, you will be responsible for managing, supporting, and optimising IBM MQ infrastructure across z/OS and zLinux environments. You will play a key role in ensuring the availability, security, performance, and reliability of enterprise messaging services. Working closely with application teams, infrastructure teams, and vendors, you will support the full lifecycle of MQ environments, including administration, troubleshooting, upgrades, and performance optimisation.

Key Responsibilities

 Administer and support IBM MQ environments across z/OS, zLinux, and MQ Enterprise platforms.

 Install, configure, upgrade, patch, and maintain IBM MQ software within enterprise environments.

 Configure and manage Queue Managers, Channels, Queues, Clustering, and Queue Sharing Groups (QSGs).

 Implement and manage MQ security, including SSL/TLS certificates, encryption standards, and access controls.

  • Monitor infrastructure availability, performance, and capacity utilisation.
  • Perform troubleshooting, root cause analysis, and resolution of MQ-related incidents and problems.

 Gather, analyse, and interpret MQ statistics and accounting data to support performance tuning and optimisation.

 Support messaging services and data transfer between host systems and distributed platforms.

 Collaborate with application teams to resolve message flow, connectivity, and performance issues.

 Coordinate with IBM and third-party vendors for complex issue resolution and problem determination.

 Ensure compliance with operational procedures, security standards, and change management processes.

 Participate in infrastructure upgrades, migration activities, disaster recovery testing, and high-availability initiatives.

Your Profile Essential skills/knowledge/experience

 Strong hands-on experience administering IBM MQ on z/OS environments.

 Expertise in IBM MQ administration across z/OS, zLinux, and MQ Enterprise platforms.

 Experience installing, upgrading, patching, and maintaining IBM MQ environments.

 Strong understanding of IBM MQ architecture, including Queue Managers, Channels, Queues, Clustering, and Queue Sharing Groups.

 Experience configuring and managing SSL/TLS security within IBM MQ environments.

 Knowledge of RACF and mainframe security concepts related to MQ.

 Experience monitoring, troubleshooting, tuning, and optimising MQ performance.

  • Ability to collect and analyse MQ statistics and accounting data for performance improvements.
  • Experience supporting messaging services and integrations across host and distributed environments.

 Strong experience with incident, problem, and change management processes in enterprise production environments.

 Excellent analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills.

Desirable skills/knowledge/experience

 Experience with IBM z/OS system administration and mainframe operations.

 Knowledge of automation and monitoring tools supporting MQ environments.

 Experience with MQ clustering, high availability, and disaster recovery solutions.

 Familiarity with CICS, DB2, IMS, and other mainframe subsystems integrated with MQ.

 Understanding of ITIL service management processes.

 IBM MQ certification or other relevant middleware certifications.
