Specialist in the department of Ophthalmology

This is a 10 PA appointment for a Specialist in Medical Retina within Ophthalmology. This post will be available from September 2026.

This post will deliver 10 PAs supporting the Medical Retina team (Ms Mohla, Mr Mukherjee and Ms Downey). The post-holder will provide specialist clinical care for patients with medical retinal disorders, including the delivery of intravitreal therapies and retinal laser treatment. There will be opportunities to contribute to service development, clinical governance, teaching and training, audit, research, and the continued improvement of Medical Retina and urgent retinal care pathways.

The post will be based cross-site at St James’s University Hospital and Seacroft Hospital.

Applicants should have completed a minimum of 12 years’ medical work (continuous or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical/dental qualification, of which a minimum of 6 years should have been in a relevant speciality in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades (or equivalent). You must also meet the criteria set out in the Specialist generic capabilities framework.

What you will bring to the role

Key aspects of the role that will appeal to the department include:

• Specialist clinical role focused on the management of medical retinal disorders, including intravitreal therapy and retinal laser treatment.
• Opportunity to contribute to urgent and emergency retinal pathways, supporting timely, sight-saving care.
• Involvement in service development and improvement of Medical Retina pathways, including integration with urgent eye care services.
• Teaching and mentoring responsibilities, including supervision and support of ophthalmology trainees and fellows.
• Participation in clinical governance, audit, quality improvement, and risk management activities to support evidence-based practice.
