Technical Scrutineer Marine Industry

Part-Time (3 days per week) | Hybrid | Petersfield, Hampshire - Contractor

Are you passionate about marine safety, technical compliance, and maintaining the highest professional standards?

The Yacht Brokers, Designers & Surveyors Association (YBDSA) is looking for a Technical Scrutineer to join our growing Certifying Authority team. This is an exciting opportunity to work with one of the UK's most respected marine organisations, supporting the certification of commercial vessels under 24 metres on behalf of the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA).

About the Role

As a Technical Scrutineer, you will review vessel certification applications, assess technical documentation, and help ensure commercial vessels comply with the relevant MCA Codes of Practice.

Working alongside experienced surveyors and technical specialists, you will play a vital role in maintaining safety standards across the UK's commercial fleet while helping to shape the future of marine compliance.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Reviewing commercial vessel coding applications and technical documentation.
  • Assessing compliance with MCA Codes of Practice.
  • Identifying technical queries and liaising with surveyors, clients and the MCA.
  • Supporting audits and certification activities.
  • Monitoring changes to marine regulations.
  • Assisting with surveyor training and technical development.
  • Maintaining accurate certification records using our CRM and management systems.

We're Looking For Someone Who Has

  • A strong technical or engineering background, ideally within the marine industry.
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills.
  • Experience interpreting technical documentation and regulations.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • The ability to prioritise work and manage multiple projects.

Desirable Experience

Applications are particularly welcomed from candidates with experience in:

  • Yacht or small craft surveying.
  • MCA Codes of Practice.
  • Certifying Authorities.
  • Classification Societies.
  • Marine regulatory or compliance environments.
