Mitie Technical Services

About the role

Mitie is seeking an exceptional Operating Unit Director to lead a major healthcare portfolio centred on one of our most significant NHS healthcare contracts in Dudley, alongside a small number of associated healthcare accounts.

This is a high-profile senior leadership position with full accountability for operational performance, commercial outcomes, strategic growth and people leadership across a complex healthcare estate. The services delivered through this portfolio play a vital role in supporting safe, reliable and compassionate environments for patients, clinicians and healthcare colleagues.

Reporting into the Healthcare leadership team, you will lead a significant healthcare portfolio with responsibility for strategy, P&L performance, service excellence, governance, compliance and culture. Having benefited from a successful transformation programme in recent years, the focus is now on sustaining performance, strengthening partnerships, delivering operational excellence and driving future growth.

What you'll be responsible for

Strategic leadership

  • Develop and deliver a multi-year healthcare strategy aligned to Mitie's vision and Technical Services ambitions.
  • Identify and secure growth opportunities across NHS and healthcare clients, including contract expansion and new business opportunities.
  • Build, develop and lead a high-performing leadership team with robust succession and talent development plans.
  • Champion innovation, digital solutions and standardised operating models to improve service quality, resilience and patient outcomes.
  • Represent Mitie at senior healthcare forums and maintain strong relationships with key public-sector stakeholders.

Operational excellence

  • Ensure safe, compliant and consistently high-quality service delivery across all healthcare contracts.
  • Maintain oversight of statutory, clinical, safeguarding and healthcare-specific compliance requirements.
  • Embed best practice and consistent operating models to drive service reliability and reduce operational risk.
  • Lead continuous improvement initiatives across quality, safety, sustainability and patient experience.
  • Drive service recovery and improvement programmes where required.

People leadership

  • Lead, inspire and develop a diverse, inclusive and high-performing leadership team.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, accountability and patient-centred decision making.
  • Coach and develop future leaders, creating strong succession pipelines across the business.
  • Demonstrate visible, values-led leadership and role model Mitie's behaviours at every level.

Client and stakeholder management

  • Act as executive sponsor for strategic healthcare clients.
  • Build trusted relationships with NHS executives, Trust leadership teams and wider healthcare system partners.
  • Ensure facilities management services directly support patient safety, clinical effectiveness and staff experience.
  • Drive customer satisfaction, contract retention and long-term partnership growth.

Commercial and financial accountability

  • Hold full P&L accountability, delivering revenue, margin and cash performance targets.
  • Oversee commercial governance, pipeline management, bid activity and risk management.
  • Ensure compliance with Mitie's delegation of authority and governance frameworks.
  • Balance strong commercial outcomes with value for money and patient-focused service delivery.

What we're looking for

  • Significant senior leadership experience within public-sector healthcare environments, including NHS Trusts, Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), healthcare PFI environments or large healthcare FM operations.
  • Proven track record of leading safe, compliant and patient-centred services at scale.
  • Strong commercial acumen with experience managing significant P&L responsibility.
  • Experience leading large, complex and highly regulated operational contracts.
  • Ability to simplify complexity, standardise operations and deliver sustainable continuous improvement.
  • Exceptional stakeholder management skills, with credibility at executive and board level.
  • Strong people leadership capability with a history of building successful, high-performing teams.
  • A collaborative and values-driven leadership style.
  • Resilience, energy and the ability to operate effectively within complex, fast-paced environments.
  • High levels of integrity, accountability and personal credibility.
