Industrialised Construction Project Engineer
An incredible opportunity has arisen
Be part of something special at Laing O'Rourke. As a leader in technology and innovation, we are transforming the way major infrastructure projects are delivered through advanced manufacturing, digital engineering and industrialised construction approaches.
Working within the Strategic Programmes Manufacturing team, you will play a critical role in bridging engineering design, manufacturing and delivery to develop innovative reinforcement solutions that improve productivity, quality and safety across major infrastructure programmes.
Who would this role suit?
A civil or structural engineering professional with a strong understanding of design, manufacturing and construction delivery. This could include individuals with experience in:
- Reinforced concrete and structural engineering.
- Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA).
- Digital engineering and BIM.
- Offsite manufacturing and industrialised construction.
- Engineering project delivery within major infrastructure, nuclear or complex construction environments.
What does the Strategic Programmes Manufacturing team do?
Our mission is clear: to industrialise civil engineering through automation, digital engineering, advanced manufacturing and modern methods of construction.
The team develops and implements innovative reinforcement products, manufacturing processes and digital solutions that support safer, faster and more predictable project delivery. Working across the entire reinforcement value chain, we collaborate with clients, designers, manufacturing specialists and project teams to transform traditional construction into a product-led manufacturing approach.
What does a Project Engineer do?
The Project Engineer is responsible for identifying, developing and implementing reinforcement cage products and sub-assembly solutions that support rapid on-site construction and industrialised delivery.
The role acts as the critical interface between client requirements, engineering design, manufacturing capability and construction delivery.
Key responsibilities include:
- Collaborate with clients, designers and delivery teams to identify reinforcement cage products and sub-assemblies suitable for industrialised construction.
- Define and develop productised reinforcement solutions that maximise offsite manufacture and minimise onsite installation activities.
- Ensure Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) requirements are clearly specified, planned and delivered throughout the project lifecycle.
- Assess engineering designs to ensure they can be efficiently manufactured, transported, assembled and installed.
- Work closely with manufacturing teams to develop and validate practical manufacturing solutions for new and existing reinforcement products.
- Ensure manufacturing capability, capacity and readiness are established to support programme requirements.
- Drive the development and implementation of digital manufacturing solutions, including data-driven production processes, digital workflows and manufacturing integration.
- Manage technical interfaces between client, design, manufacturing and construction stakeholders.
- Review and challenge designs to improve constructability, manufacturability and productivity outcomes.
- Identify and mitigate technical, manufacturing and delivery risks.
- Produce technical reports, engineering assessments and recommendations.
- Support programme planning, product development and resource coordination activities.
Essential Experience
- Degree-qualified in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
- Experience delivering reinforced concrete, structural or infrastructure projects in complex engineering environments.
- Demonstrable experience working with Design for Manufacture and Assembly (DfMA) principles.
- Strong understanding of reinforced concrete construction, reinforcement detailing and fabrication processes.
- Experience collaborating with clients, design teams and supply chain partners to develop engineering solutions.
- Knowledge of manufacturing processes, production planning and quality requirements associated with engineered products.
- Experience interpreting engineering drawings, BIM models and technical specifications.
- Understanding of industrialised construction methodologies and offsite manufacturing techniques.
- Strong technical problem-solving and stakeholder management capabilities.
- Ability to evaluate engineering solutions from a constructability, manufacturability and installation perspective.
Desirable Experience
- Experience developing reinforcement cage products, prefabricated assemblies or kit-of-parts solutions.
- Knowledge of digital manufacturing technologies, production automation or Industry 4.0 principles.
- Experience with Tekla, BIM, digital engineering or manufacturing data environments.
- Understanding of nuclear or other highly regulated industry quality assurance requirements.
- Working towards Chartered Engineer status (ICE, IStructE or equivalent).
- Experience within advanced manufacturing, modular construction or major infrastructure programmes.
