About the role
We’re looking for a hands-on Maintenance Operative to help keep our buildings and grounds safe, clean, secure and running smoothly. You will handle a mix of planned and reactive maintenance in a busy, occupied education environment, supporting staff, students and visitors every day.
Requirements
What you’ll be doing
Maintenance and repairs:
- Planned and reactive maintenance across buildings and grounds
- Minor repairs: carpentry, basic plumbing, painting, decorating and general fabric maintenance
- Spot issues early, log defects, and support contractor coordination for complex works
- Deliver work to a high standard and within agreed timescales
Health, safety and compliance:
- Routine health and safety checks and reporting
- Support fire safety checks, emergency lighting tests, and basic legionella controls (where trained)
- Follow COSHH, risk assessments and safe systems of work
- Maintain safe working practices and use PPE correctly
Site operations and security:
- Assist with opening and closing the site, as required
- Monitor site security and report concerns promptly
- Support emergency procedures, including evacuations and incident response
Grounds and external areas:
- Maintain paths, fences, car parks and loading areas
- Seasonal tasks such as gritting and leaf clearance
Support and service:
- Respond promptly and professionally to maintenance requests
- Set up rooms for exams, events and meetings
- Work well with colleagues, contractors and visitors
Records and stock:
- Keep accurate maintenance records, inspection logs and checklists
- Support stock control for tools, materials and supplies
What we’re looking for
Essential:
- NVQ Level 2 (or equivalent) in a relevant trade, or strong practical experience
- Experience in maintenance, caretaking or facilities
- Experience working in occupied buildings
- Strong all round practical skills and good problem solving
- Good health and safety awareness
- Able to work independently, manage priorities and stay organised
- Basic IT skills for job logging and record keeping
- Reliable, proactive and flexible
- Professional, polite approach
- Physically fit and comfortable with manual tasks
- Commitment to safeguarding
Desirable:
- Education or public sector experience
- First Aid qualification
- Knowledge of safeguarding procedures
- Full UK driving licence
