About Birmingham City University

At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.

Recognised as one of the UK’s Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.

Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking — those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.

By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.

Role Summary

We are seeking a Go Abroad Officer to join our Careers and Student Opportunities team supporting the delivery of high-quality services across the University.

The role supports the delivery of the university’s study abroad activities, including those funded by the Turing Scheme. The role is responsible for the administration and coordination of both incoming and outgoing student mobility, ensuring that students are supported throughout the process and that all activities are compliant with funding and institutional requirements.

We are looking for someone with previous experience of working on mobility programmes ideally within further or higher education. You should have experience of working to targets and working on multiple projects simultaneously. You will be comfortable working independently while playing a pivotal part in a small, fast-paced and ambitious team seeking to make a real impact on student’s and graduate’s prospects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate Study Abroad Administration
  • Manage applications, student records, and tracking processes to ensure smooth delivery of study abroad and mobility programmes.
  • Support the Student Journey
  • Provide guidance and support to students from initial enquiry through to return, ensuring a positive and well-managed experience.
  • Deliver Mobility Schemes & Compliance
  • Support the administration of programmes such as the Turing Scheme, ensuring accurate data management, reporting, and compliance with funding requirements.
  • Collaborate with Stakeholders & Partners
  • Work closely with academic teams, professional services, and international partners to coordinate opportunities and maintain strong relationships.
  • Promote Opportunities & Enhance Services
  • Contribute to promotional events and fairs, respond to enquiries, and support continuous improvement of processes to increase participation and enhance the student experience.

Essential Requirements

  • Experience in an administrative or student-facing role, ideally within a higher education environment.
  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide clear guidance to a range of stakeholders.
  • High level of accuracy and attention to detail, particularly in maintaining records and documentation.
  • Confident in using digital systems and tools (e.g. Microsoft Office, databases, or student record systems).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively, with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality customer service.

Desirable

  • Experience supporting study abroad or international mobility programmes.
  • Awareness of schemes such as Turing or Erasmus+.
  • Understanding of safeguarding, risk, or health and safety considerations in student travel.
