The Regional Head of Maintenance is responsible for leading the maintenance, performance, and continuous improvement of engineering assets and automation across a defined geographic region.
The role is primarily site-based, with an initial focus on 2–3 key operational sites before expanding responsibility across the wider regional estate. Regular travel is required, with the role providing visible, hands-on leadership to operational engineering teams across Mail Centres, Delivery Offices, and Parcelforce depots.
The Regional Head of Maintenance will lead the delivery of maintenance strategies that maximise asset reliability, equipment availability, safety, and operational performance. Working closely with Engineering, Operations, and key stakeholders, the role will drive reactive, preventative, and autonomous maintenance activities while ensuring compliance with engineering standards, statutory requirements, and business objectives. As a senior leadership role, the Regional Head of Maintenance will develop and inspire a high-performing team of Site Maintenance Managers, championing continuous improvement, engineering excellence, and operational efficiency across the region.
Key Accountabilities
- Provide strategic and operational leadership for engineering maintenance and asset performance across a defined region, ensuring safe, reliable, and efficient operation of automation and engineering assets.
- Initially lead engineering activity across 2–3 key operational sites before expanding responsibility across the wider regional estate, maintaining a visible and hands-on presence.
- Deliver reactive, preventative, and autonomous maintenance strategies that maximise equipment reliability, availability, and operational performance while reducing downtime.
- Lead the development and implementation of maintenance and asset renewal plans, ensuring critical infrastructure remains safe, compliant, and aligned with future business requirements.
- Ensure full compliance with engineering standards, statutory legislation, health and safety requirements, and company governance across all sites.
- Lead and develop a team of Site Maintenance Managers, creating a high-performing culture through coaching, performance management, succession planning, and capability development.
- Drive a culture of continuous improvement by embedding engineering best practice, standardised maintenance processes, and operational excellence across the region.
- Work collaboratively with Engineering Design, Projects, Operations, Procurement, and other key stakeholders to support the successful introduction of new automation and engineering technologies.
- Build strong relationships with senior operational leaders, trade unions, and key business stakeholders to influence decision-making and deliver sustainable operational improvements.
- Manage regional engineering resources and maintenance activities to deliver agreed service levels, operational performance, and value for money.
Key Skills & Experience
- Strong engineering background with significant experience in maintenance leadership within a complex operational or industrial environment.
- Proven experience managing engineering, operational, and technical teams, with expertise in Mechanical, Electrical, Building Services, or Automation Engineering.
- Demonstrable experience developing and implementing maintenance strategies that improve asset reliability, operational performance, and equipment availability.
- Proven ability to lead large, geographically dispersed teams, creating high levels of engagement, accountability, and performance.
- Strong stakeholder management and communication skills, with experience influencing senior leaders, operational teams, and trade unions.
- Experience leading change and continuous improvement programmes within engineering or operational environments.
- Hands-on technical knowledge combined with strong analytical and systematic problem-solving skills.
- Ability to balance operational priorities with strategic objectives while delivering against safety, quality, cost, and performance targets.
- Highly motivated with a proven track record of successfully delivering engineering improvements in fast-paced and challenging environments.
- Willingness to travel extensively, maintaining a visible, site-based leadership presence across the region.
