Help shape the future of East Kilbride Credit Union
You don't need all the answers. Just be willing to ask questions.
East Kilbride Credit Union (EKCU) is looking for enthusiastic, committed individuals to join our Board of Directors and help shape the future of our organisation.
Established in 1982, EKCU is a member-owned financial co-operative providing accessible savings and responsible lending services to our members.
As we approach our 45th anniversary in 2027, we're focused on growing our membership, developing our services and ensuring we remain a modern, relevant and trusted financial choice for the communities we serve.
We're looking for people who can bring fresh perspectives, professional experience and a genuine interest in helping us achieve those ambitions.
What does a Non-Executive Director do?
Our Board plays an important role in setting EKCU's strategic direction, overseeing performance and ensuring that the Credit Union operates responsibly and in the best interests of its members.
As a Director, you'll work alongside fellow Board members and our management team to:
- Contribute to EKCU's strategic direction and long-term development.
- Review performance, financial information and progress against our business objectives.
- Ask questions, offer constructive challenge and contribute to informed decisions.
- Help ensure appropriate governance, risk management and regulatory oversight.
- Support the Credit Union's continued growth and financial sustainability.
- Represent the interests of our members and uphold the values of the Credit Union.
You won't be responsible for the day-to-day running of EKCU. Your role is to provide strategic oversight, independent judgement and constructive input.
This is, however, a formal Director position within a regulated financial organisation, carrying governance responsibilities and individual accountability.
Who are we looking for?
We're particularly interested in hearing from individuals with experience in:
- Marketing, communications or business development – helping us increase awareness, attract new members and strengthen our community presence.
- Legal, governance or regulatory matters – bringing knowledge and experience to support effective oversight and decision-making.
However, we're also keen to hear from individuals with experience in other areas, including finance, technology, digital transformation, human resources, business management and community development.
Previous Credit Union or Board experience is not essential.
More importantly, we're looking for people who:
- Are curious and comfortable asking questions.
- Can think strategically and see the bigger picture.
- Are willing to challenge constructively and respectfully.
- Bring independent judgement and a collaborative approach.
- Are prepared to read papers, attend meetings and actively participate.
- Share our commitment to fairness, community and putting members first.
We're not looking for people who know everything. We're looking for people who are willing to learn, contribute and get involved.
What's involved?
This is a voluntary, unpaid position requiring regular in-person attendance in East Kilbride.
Our Board normally meets once a month, with meetings lasting approximately two hours.
Directors are also expected to review papers before meetings, respond to occasional correspondence, participate in relevant discussions and undertake appropriate training and development.
There may also be opportunities to contribute to strategic planning sessions, committees and other activities throughout the year.
This is not a remote position. Applicants must be able to travel to East Kilbride regularly to fulfil their Board responsibilities.
Full induction, guidance and ongoing training will be provided.
What will you gain?
Joining our Board offers an opportunity to:
- Use your professional knowledge and experience to make a meaningful difference.
- Develop your leadership, governance and strategic decision-making skills.
- Gain Board-level experience within a regulated financial organisation.
- Work alongside people from different professional backgrounds.
- Contribute to the growth and sustainability of a member-owned organisation.
- Help shape the future of a Credit Union that has served its community since 1982.
Interested?
We understand that joining a Board is a significant commitment, particularly if you haven't held a Director position before.
That's why we're happy to arrange an informal, no-obligation conversation to explain the role, answer your questions and help you decide whether it's right for you.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to participate in EKCU's formal recruitment and appointment process, including relevant suitability and regulatory checks.
