Full Job Description

Make a Real Difference in Young People’s Lives

We are looking for a passionate and experienced

Outreach Youth Mentor to support young people who may have experienced barriers within traditional education.

This is a rewarding role for someone who is empathetic, resilient and able to build meaningful relationships with young people. You will support learners to rebuild their confidence, develop their independence and work towards positive outcomes in education, training and employment.

The role will be hybrid, consisting of 3 days per week delivering outreach support within the community or young person’s home and 2 days per week working onsite.

This is much more than a traditional mentoring role. You will act as a trusted mentor, positive role model and advocate, providing both educational and pastoral support.

Key Responsibilities

Mentoring & Outreach Support

  • Deliver 1:1 and small-group mentoring within homes, community settings and onsite.
  • Build positive and trusting relationships with young people and their families.
  • Support young people with their emotional wellbeing, confidence and resilience.
  • Help learners manage challenges and develop positive behaviours.
  • Use creative and individualised approaches to encourage engagement.
  • Support young people who may have SEND, SEMH needs or experienced barriers to education.

Education & Progression

  • Deliver a pre-agreed curriculum, including Functional Skills Maths and English, Art, Careers and personal development sessions.
  • Support learners working from Pre-Entry Level through to Level 2.
  • Adapt learning to individual interests, aspirations, abilities and learning styles.
  • Create engaging teaching and learning resources.
  • Provide appropriate marking, feedback and guidance.
  • Support young people with progression into further education, training or employment.
  • Assist with educational reports and relevant SEND documentation.

Safeguarding & Positive Environments

  • Maintain a safe, inclusive and supportive environment for every young person.
  • Follow safeguarding, child protection and lone-working procedures.
  • Maintain accurate records using relevant internal systems, including CPOMS where applicable.
  • Confidently support challenging situations using calm and appropriate de-escalation strategies.
  • Work collaboratively with teachers, mentors, families and other professionals.
  • Participate positively in meetings, training and continued professional development.
  • Support enrichment and engagement activities.

There may also be a requirement to transport young people, so candidates should be able to meet the appropriate driving, insurance, tax and MOT requirements.

Essential Requirements

  • GCSE Grade 4/C or above in Maths and English.
  • Safeguarding training at Level 3 or above.
  • At least 2 years’ experience working with young people within an education, youth or similar setting.
  • Experience supporting young people’s wellbeing.
  • Strong understanding of safeguarding and a commitment to young people’s welfare.
  • Ability to build positive and trusting relationships with young people.
  • Calm, resilient and emotionally intelligent approach.
  • Strong communication and organisational skills.
  • Confident working both independently and as part of a wider team.
  • Genuine passion for helping young people overcome barriers and succeed.

Desirable Experience

  • Youth Work qualification at Level 3 or above.
  • Teaching Assistant qualification.
  • Information, Advice and Guidance qualification at Level 2 or above.
  • Experience delivering outreach support within homes or community settings.
  • Experience supporting post-16 learners and/or young people with SEND.
  • Experience supporting young people who display challenging behaviour.
  • Knowledge or experience of CPOMS.
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills or supporting Maths and English learning.

Safeguarding

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expect everyone working with us to share this commitment.

The successful candidate will be required to complete all relevant safeguarding and compliance checks, including an Enhanced DBS check.
