Senior Merchandiser

BOXRAW

Date: 1 week ago
City: Coventry, England
Contract type: Full time

Founded in 2017, BOXRAW was built to lead the narrative of boxing: the lifestyle, the culture and the competition of our sport. We move the sport forwards with product that’s credible, creative and disruptive, across every corner of boxing. We back fighters* of every level, gender and ability, whether they’re competing on the world stage or against themselves.

The reason we’ve got this far is our people, and the reason we’ll get where we’re going is who we hire next. We believe in talent and passion, we look for dedication and energy, and we back the people who bring creativity and new thinking. We don’t care where you come from. We care where you’re headed. We’re a mix of backgrounds and we like it that way. If you work smart and you’re still getting better, we want to hear from you.

*In every mind is a fighter.

The Role

You own the stock. All of it. What we buy, in what sizes, at what price, when it lands and when it gets marked down. You plan the year ahead rather than reacting to the quarter, you keep the bestsellers in stock, and you’re the commercial voice next to product when a decision needs testing against the numbers.

Right now we buy too deep and not often enough, which leaves cash in stock that does not sell and gaps where it does. Fixing that is the job.

How You’ll Work

  • You sit in the commercial team and report to our Commercial Director.
  • You’re in the product team’s daily standup, every day. Whatever we’re curious about on a new product, you bring the data to it.
  • You’re the go-to person for anything to do with product data. If anyone needs to know how a product, category or price point is performing, they come to you.
  • The Buying Admin Assistant handles purchase orders, the product database, SKUs and barcodes, and supplier chasing, and reports to you. Your time goes on the numbers, not the admin.

Main Accountabilities

Stock

  • You own all stock. What we’re holding, what’s on the water, what’s committed, in every size.
  • You own stock cover and stock turn. Inventory stays flat rather than peaking and troughing, which means buying more often in smaller quantities rather than betting the season on one big drop.
  • You own availability on the bestsellers. They don’t go out of stock, and you forecast their annual units so we’re never reacting.
  • You own the ageing stock and the exit plan for it.

Forward Planning and the Buy

  • You own the open-to-buy and the weekly sales, stock and intake (the WSSI).
  • You plan 9 to 12 months out. You know what you’re buying by season well before it’s needed, POs are signed off far enough in advance that goods come in by sea in good time, and air freight is an exception you had to justify, not a habit.
  • You own the demand plan and the size curves, rebuilt each season from what actually sold, and you know the intake by size on every order.
  • You own speed to market on repeats. Committing fabric in bulk so we can turn multiple styles and sizes quickly off the same base, rather than starting from zero every time we need stock.
  • You own the supplier commercials: cost prices challenged season on season, discounts and margin negotiated, MOQ splits reworked so a minimum follows the data rather than dictating the buy.

Working with Product

  • You own the commercial view on what gets designed and bought. Product brings the idea, you bring the data on whether it sells and at what volume.
  • You own the read on where we’re underoptioned: which categories are thin against demand, which are worth expanding into, and the data that backs it.
  • You’re the voice of reason in the room. When something doesn’t stack up commercially, you say so at the time, with the numbers.
  • You protect the space for risk. Product should be able to try things, and your job is to make that affordable by sizing the bet: smaller quantities, tighter first buys, and a clear read at the other end of whether it earned a repeat.
  • You own the market analysis behind your view. Comparable brands, their ranges and their price points. You do that work yourself.
  • You own the range framework: option count by category, price points, core against new. Once it’s agreed, you hold it.

Price, Margin and Markdown

  • You own the price architecture across the range, and where every new product sits on it before it’s costed.
  • You own margin: intake margin by line and blended by category, known before the buy is placed, not after.
  • You own the markdown and discount strategy. When something goes down, by how much, and why, planned before the season rather than decided in a panic.
  • You own the cost of it. Markdown spend tracked against the sales it bought.

The Line List

  • You own it, start to finish, and it’s right every time anyone opens it.
  • You open it as the range framework before design starts, and you hold it as the live plan through to delivery.
  • You keep it current within 24 hours of anything changing. Product, marketing, finance and GTM all plan off it.
  • You’re accountable for what it tells us: where the range is thin, where we’ve duplicated ourselves, which price points are empty, which months are overloaded.

Trading and Reporting

  • You own the weekly trade against plan by category, with variances explained rather than reported.
  • You own the call on every new style at 8 and 12 weeks. Reorder, hold or exit, in writing.
  • You own the weekly Merchandising Insights Report: trade view, stock cover, what’s overstocked, what’s short, a why on every major movement, and actions at the top with a name and a date on each.
  • You own the quarterly buy review: OTB against committed against actual, sell-through by style, the kill list and the chase list.
  • You surface the problem first. Slipping dates, lines going short, overstock building, margin drifting, with the number attached and a recommendation.

Key Skills

  • You can build a WSSI and explain it, and defend a size curve from the data underneath it.
  • Data-fluent. Excel is second nature, lookups, pivots and models included. Quick across Shopify and whatever reporting you’re given.
  • In the detail. You check your own work before anyone else sees it. A wrong SKU or a broken total doesn’t leave your desk.
  • You can put a recommendation in front of a founder and hold your ground, because you’ve got the data.
  • AI-powered. You use AI day to day, Claude ideally, to move faster and make sharper decisions, and you check what it gives you before it goes out.
  • Direct. You flag risk early, give realistic dates, and put your name on your recommendations.

What Success Looks Like

• Stock cover, stock turn and sell-through, first and foremost

• Availability on core lines

• Intake margin against plan

• Markdown spend as a percentage of sales

• Forecast accuracy

• An accurate weekly WSSI

• No range or pricing decision gets made without your numbers in front of it

Experience

  • Five years or more in merchandising at an e-commerce or multi-channel clothing brand, where you owned the number for a category or range.
  • You’ve planned a year ahead, not a quarter. You can talk us through how you phased intake across a season and what you’d do differently.
  • You’ve owned price architecture and margin and negotiated with suppliers to get both where they needed to be.
  • You’ve built a range plan and worked alongside a product team off it, including the times you said no.
  • You can walk us through a season you traded: what you chased, what you killed, what the markdowns cost.

Successful People at BOXRAW

Act Like an Owner. Take real responsibility from day one.

Find a Way. Focus on solutions, not problems.

Fight It Out, Then Commit. Debate openly, then unite behind decisions.

No Excuses. No negative energy, no bureaucracy.

For this role in particular: you trust the numbers and you know when to question them. You’d rather raise something in the standup than explain it at the end of the season. You can push back on the product team without making it a fight, because you both want the same thing, product that sells. And you get the detail right, because the whole business plans off your work.
