St Margaret’s Hospice Care is seeking an exceptional Director of Finance & Resources to join our Executive Team at a pivotal point in our development.

This is a broad and influential role, combining strategic financial leadership with responsibility for estates, facilities, procurement and wider corporate resources. You will help ensure that every pound, asset and enabling service supports excellent care, positive colleague experience and our long-term resilience.

Role Details

  • Salary: £87,975 per annum
  • Location: Taunton or Yeovil, with regular travel across Somerset
  • Contract: Permanent
  • Working Pattern: Full time (37 hours per week), including some evenings and weekends

For more than 45 years, St Margaret’s has provided compassionate, specialist palliative and end-of-life care, free of charge, to people across Somerset. Our services support a population of around 520,000 people, enabled by 344 colleagues, 66 bank staff and 1,480 volunteers. With annual turnover exceeding £16 million, two hospice sites and 32 charity shops, we have strong foundations and an ambitious five-year strategy focused on raising our voice, enhancing our care and stewarding our resources.

The opportunity

  • Lead financial strategy, planning, budgeting, forecasting and performance across the hospice, with organisational profit and loss accountability.
  • Provide clear analysis, insight and constructive challenge to the Chief Executive, Board, committees and senior leaders.
  • Maintain robust governance, control and assurance, including statutory reporting, audit, risk, cash flow, reserves and compliance with charity accounting requirements.
  • Shape and deliver a strategic review of our estate, ensuring our hospice and retail sites, assets and infrastructure are safe, sustainable, effective and fit for the future.
  • Lead and develop high-performing finance and corporate resource teams, championing collaboration, accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Contribute fully to collective executive leadership and major decisions about investment, transformation and organisational sustainability.

About you

You will be a professionally qualified senior finance leader with strong commercial judgement and substantial experience of financial strategy, governance, planning and performance in a complex organisation. You will also bring experience of leading wider corporate resources, estates, facilities or operational support functions, together with the ability to use data, modelling and scenario planning to support confident decisions.

Credible with Boards and senior stakeholders, you will explain complex issues clearly, provide constructive challenge and build trusted relationships across clinical, retail, income-generating and professional services. Above all, you will be a visible, values-led leader who combines integrity and financial grip with compassion, collaboration and ambition.

What we offer

  • 29 days’ annual leave, rising to 33 days after five years, plus bank holidays.
  • Hospice pension plan with 6% employer contribution, or the option to remain in the NHS Pension Scheme where eligible.
  • Learning and development support, life assurance, health cash plan, 24/7 virtual GP access and an Employee Assistance Programme.
  • Enhanced maternity leave (eligibility criteria applies)
  • Free parking, cycle-to-work scheme, annual leave purchase and sale, and Blue Light Discount Card.
